Formal Analysis

Liza Minnelli by Andy Warhol.
Subject: Pop figure, Social Functions
Subject Matter: Liza Minelli
Form: Polaroid Polacolor. Printed, silkscreen portrait from Polaroid. 3 3/4 x 2 7/8 in.
98.XM.168.4. Value is used to accentuate the features of Minnelli. The redness of the lips also draw the viewer into the actress’s features.
Content: Minnelli first appeared on screen as a toddler. Child of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, Liza was born into stardom. Warhol was fascinated by Minnelli’s features. He found a strong, ionic face with bold features. Her large dark eyes and red lips stood out on the print even before it was transferred to silkscreen. Warhol appreciated the simple lines and religious overtones of Minnelli’s sad face. This piece was portraying this alluring celebrity while also suggesting her private burdens.
